Susan W. McMakin, P.C., Attorney and Counsellor at Law

Susan McMakin began her legal career with a major Washington law firm followed by a judicial clerkship in her home town, Dayton, Ohio.  After serving four years with the United States Army Judge Advocate General’s Corps she practiced Civil Rights law as a trial attorney with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission in Philadelphia.  In 1981, she entered private practice in the field of Estate Planning.  In addition to her private practice she was with the Equitable Life Assurance Society for eight years as a Registered Representative and Financial Planner.  In 1999 she retired from the United States Army Reserve with the rank of colonel.

Mrs. McMakin holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Trinity University in Washington, D.C. She earned her Law Degree from George Washington University; Master of Law and Taxation from William and Mary; and the CLU and ChFC designations from the American College.

She has written several articles on Estate Planning and is a contributing author of Legacy and Generations both of which are full-length books on estate planning.  Most recently she has co-authored a book entitled: ESTATE PLANNING STRATEGIES: Collective Wisdom and Proven Techniques , which is available for $29.95 through Amazon.com.

She frequently speaks before professional and civic organizations and is a member of the Estate Planning Council of Richmond.

A member of the Virginia and Ohio bars, she is also a member of Wealth Counsel, a membership organization offering educational and technical support to attorneys in the area of estate and business planning.  Susan is an accredited attorney with the Veterans Administration and is admitted to both the U.S. Tax Court and the  Supreme Court of the United States.
